Pete Woods
British Citizen
Living in New Zealand

Pete Woods (middle)

Skill Level:

  • 4 years machining incl. Machinist Course & Fitter Turner Course
  • Use lathes, mills, grinders on a daily basis

Machines owned:

Don’t own any machines but work in a machine shop full time, we work to a tolerance of 0.001″ for every job.

Why I got into machining:

I have always been interested in creating things and designing stuff. My dad was an aero-machinist/welder for 22 years in the British RAF and still is here in NZ. I decided to follow his path and become an aero-machinist also. Its the best feeling being able to say “I made this” or saying to yourself, “now how am i going to make this/repair this”. I love creating a thought process in my head and completing it to perfection.

One day I want to set up my own small workshop in my ‘future garage’, create a website and work from home – something to aspire too!

Skill Level:

  • Amateur
  • 4 years machining experience (intermittent)

Machines owned:

Craftsman (Atlas 618)

Craftsman (Atlas 618)

  • 6″ swing x 18″ bc
  • Purchased 2006

Monarch CU20

Monarch CU20

  • 22.5″ swing x 48″ bc
  • Purchased Aug 2010

Shop:

My shop area occupies about a quarter of my basement, which means the Monarch stays at Dad’s place till I get a bigger building.  Not in the photo are the woodworking equipment, the Black Diamond Drill sharpener the Parkerizing tanks, and Blast Cabinet.

Why I got into machining:

I have always been fascinated by Lathes, my father had one which supported his fabrication-shop when I worked there as a child.  I purchased the Atlas to support my gunsmithing business and jointly purchased the Monarch partly for my business but also as an excuse to begin working with my Dad again.  I get a lot of satisfaction making something myself; especially a tool which I can turn to over and over again, and know that I made it.  Besides, it’s fun!
