I've viewed the Gears web site. next show is September, 2012 but no specific date. I am thinking about riding to a show this summer but not sure which. NAMES, I understand is sort of deteriorating for lack of a better word. I have attended in the past and it was huge. The venue is now being changed to from what I understand is a smaller facility. I have also been to Cabin Fever and it was excellent. Little hard to ride in the winter tho. I am wondering how GEARS stacks up with the big two shows. From the web site I did not get much of an idea about its size or attendance. Can someone comment on this?

OfflineHi Les, I've been to GEARS once two years ago. It's held in an armory in Portland. I'm terrible about estimating square footage or attendance, but I'd guess that the exhibitor space was probably 100x100' or larger and there were probably 200-300 people there at any given time (but easily more than a thousand that cycled through – it's a 2-day event). And probably at least 30+ different exhibitors. Each exhibitor brought at least one model, but on average probably had 5 models on display. So maybe 100-150 different models to look at from 30 machinists. There was also a metal casting workshop out back where they had an aluminum foundry set up with sand molds.
It's a small event, but for me it was worth the 2.5hr drive from Seattle. But I'm not sure where you'll be driving from or if you have a place to stay in Portland (although you can see the whole show in 1 day – so no need to stay for both days unless you wanted to). I hope that helps.

Thanks for the info Tyler,
I'm planning to ride my Tryke from Denver. I was hoping to find a large show like NAMES or Cabin Fever somewhere in the West. If it's a long ride I'm hoping for a large venue.
Thanks Again,

Les,
The show dates are September 29-30, 2012. Doors open at 9AM for the public.
Last year we had around 53 exhibitors and over 1,000 attendees. Other then that Tylers descrption was pretty accurate. We also have vendors selling new tools, books, etc. And some that only sell used tools.
Thank you Tyler for the good description.
BTW we are the biggest show of this type west of the Rockies and we have been going strong and growing for 8 years (this will be our 9th show in 2012). The show is hosted by a non-profit company, Oregon Home Machinists, inc. and all of the work is done by volunteers drawn from the 3 model engineering clubs in Oregon, 1 club in Vancouver, Washington, and the many exhibitors that show up early to help setup the tables. No one takes home any money from this show (except the vendors of course). As opportunity presents itself, money is donated to local schools to help promote trade classes.
