Hi Tyler,

I noticed some folks have photos or similar avatar next to their posts. I assume these are attached to the users profile, but I have not been able to find the method for uploading.

Click "profile" at the top right of your screen.  Under that is a button to upload an avatar.

The button is maybe not a clear as it could be, it's the word 'Profile' in dark blue in the 'Logged in as…' banner.
