Tyler, we got power on late last night. I guess I wasn't clear in my post. The man cave is back up to 67 so all is well in my world. I'll be busy tomorrow night, how is your day on Monday?

Tyler, 5 Would be GREAT!( I don't care on color what ever you want to make them) I'm impressed with what you've made. I doubt if I could ever learn how to make one work.

Thanks!!!

@Sammy, teaching monday/wed until 10pm, but tuesday/thursday I'm free after 4pm.

@Norman, the only color I have right now is black, but I'm ordering gray and a few other colors. The probem is they come in $50 rolls of filament! So it's a bit expensive to outfit the new printer with all the colors of the rainbow.

Also, I've altered the print a bit so that it's slimmer and prints faster. I took a cue from your design actually, and modified mine so that it was similar in shape. It prints 33% faster (and uses 33% less material). But the real reason is that it doesn't seem to warp as much as the larger print. So I'll send you 5 of the "slim" version if that's alright. Send me a PM with your address.

@Ken, that's exactly what my wife said. It's like having a replicator on my desk! By the way, I see you're from Mobile. My dad spent his teens in Mobile and Gulf Shores is one of our family's favorite vacation spots.

@Mtw fdu, Thanks! More pics coming as soon as I get my home internet working again.

Tyler,

It's been over a month since we heard anything more about  Makerbot Thing-O-Matic. You had mentioned a time-lapse video of the kit building?

When I go to Makerbot.com now, I see that they are discontinuing the Thing-O-Matic (now $1099 until supplies run out), and have brought out a bigger, better 3D printer called the Replicator.  It is not available as a kit and is only available already put together.  Kind of expensive at $1750, plus an 8 week wait.  Did you know about the Replicator when you ordered your Thing-O-Matic?

Have you seen the $350 3D printer that Hoss is making? It looks like he is having to fuss with it a lot more than you had to with your printer.

I've got all the video in HD format. About 20gigs worth. I need to pull it all into either Final Cut Pro, or Premier Pro and turn it into a time lapse. I just havent had a chance to mess with it. I thought I'd be less busy after the layoff, but I'm actually more busy than ever (the wife has decided that since I'm not working I can do this, I can finally get that project done …. you get the idea).

As for the printer, it works great. It's a bit like a guitar in the sense that it needs to be re-calibrated after a car ride. I'm not sure if that's an issue with vibration, temperature, or both. But I've taken it to visit a few friends and every time I pull it out of the car the Z axis is off by a considerable amount – enough to affect the print quality. Not a big deal since recalibrating is easy, but I wish I didn't have to do it.

As for knowing about the Replicator, I didn't know that they were releasing a new design until a day or two after mine arrived in the mail. Apparently they let people who's orders were still pending (hadn't shipped) change their order, but mine had already shipped before the announcement. I was slightly bummed, but I wanted to assemble mine myself anyway, and since the Replicator isn't available as a kit I probably still would have purchased the ToM if given the choice.

The print quality is the same between the two printers (same nozzle size and print head) but the Replicator allows dual color extrusions which would (occasionally) be nice to have. It also has a larger platform, which is the biggest reason I might have been tempted to go with it over the ToM. But I'm going to build my own from scratch over the next few months with an 8x8" platform. So I won't need a Replicator once I've got mine built.

The Hoss printer looks like the Prusa, which is what I'm planning on building next. It's built using printed parts and regular hardware store hardware, so if you have a printer (or know someone who has one) it's a great printer to build. I didn't know anyone with a printer and didn't know enough about 3D printers to start with a Prusa, so I cut my teeth on the ToM instead. I wanted to be up and printing in as little time as possible. The Prusa takes a few weeks minimum to get together (from what I have heard).

Anyway, owning a 3D printer has been by far one of my best purchases EVER. I can't even begin to describe how many things I've made and how much easier it is for me to turn an idea or concept into a working prototype. I can do it much faster and easier with my 3D printer than I've ever been able to with any other tool I have at my disposal. It's really been an amazingly rewarding purchase.

I will post more info soon. I promise. Laugh

I suppose it is a bit simpler, because you know as the saying goes with metal or woodwork, "You can't put it back on once you've cut it off". Quite severe TES occuring over here.

Stand back.

Tool Envy Syndrome. My kingdom for a huge garage, and a wad of cash that'd make Maddonna feel poor.
