Does anyone know where I could find blueprints to make a small lighthouse?  I had one once, but can't find it anywhere and am having trouble finding one online.  I was planning to make it only around 12-15 inches long.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Any idea what company the blueprints came from? Are they still around?

I got the print when I was at my machinist schooling through the Army and it was a discontinued project that the instructor had given me, so i my guess is that someone had drawn it up themselves.  Looks as though I may have to do the same.  I've been looking at wooden ones online to get some ideas so I suppose it will be a trial and error thing until I get it to look right.  If they turn out nice I'll submit the plans for anyone else to enjoy.  I just thought it would be a neat project to have sitting around the house.

Speaking of blueprings…

Can anyone here steer me to a relatively SIMPLE, easy-to-use, and FREE CAD program so I can make drawings for the simple things I make, rather than my simplistic, crude sketches??? No, I didn't take mechanical drawing in school, but have missed not having the ability many times over the centuries… :)  And, yes, I can make neater drawings with ruler, T-square, compass, etc…. but… :)

And JP. didn't know they had any lighthouses in sunny Iraq :):) … Seriously, please do share any design you come up with… and even MORE SERIOUSLY, THANK YOU for serving our Country, and return safe. Will add you to my prayer list.   'There are no athiiests in foxholes'

Let's see, Iraqi lighthouse… huummm… take one of Saddam's surplus tanks, invert it and convert the drive wheels into a diesel powered lathe… :) then take one of his artillery barrels [he's not gonna need that cannon anyway :)]. Crush an RPG launcher tube to creat a cutting tool, and go to it… might want to make it in sections so you can ship the short sections of the lighthouse home a piece at a time… :)

     – Don     missing too many body parts to serve our Country, but blessed and grateful for all those who do.

HaHa, yeah I'll have to see what I can come up with; I am lucky enough to have a decent amount of roundstock to play with though.  I just got our mill set up the other day so thats going to open up a lot more possibilities.  It's definitely gonna save me a lot of filing haha.  Anyways, thanks for the support and I'm gonna start some drawings soon.  As for the CADD, good luck!  I haven't used that stuff since '02 and I can barely remember what to do with it.

Hey Don, I use AutoDesk Inventor – but I'm still learning. There's a lot to the program.

It isn't cheap, but you can download pirated copies everywhere (try thepiratebay.org) not that I condone piracy …

I think Autodesk might even have a free trial download. I'm sure there are some other free options as well, but I haven't used any.

Google has a program called Sketchup – it's not a CAD program per-se, but I've used it before to draw up some simple blueprints. It's very easy to use and it's free.

Anyone else have a recommendation?

@JP, was the lighthouse you speak of made of metal? If so, I've never seen one. I've only seen the kind made of wood and sold at roadside stands and farmers markets. A metal one would be neat!

SolidEdge has a free 2D CAD program that I really like working with.  I do my 3D design and dimensioning in Rhino 3D but when I want to make a simple set of drawings I export the "Make2D" output from Rhino to SolidEdge and dimension it in there.  Rhino even gives me that nice little 3D outline perspective view to include in the drawing.

Pretty nice 2D CAD package that SolidEdge is giving away.

Thank you, origin 7511. That's the sort of practical advice that folks so freely share here that makes this site so great… now if only I could find a pill that would cure some of my lathe 'learning experiences' :):), but the BGT marchs on! :)

Thanks Origin, Solid Edge looks pretty interesting. Unfortunately it's a windows only application. I've transitioned to Mac and the only thing keeping my PC on my desk as a second computer is my need for a quality CAD solution. I currently use Autodesk Inventor, but it's also windows only.
