Hey guys im interested in making my own 1/2 inch or 3/8s boring bar . The problem is i have a bunch of different carbide inserts my father gave me and its hard to find the right boring bar to buy looking at grizzlys catalog . 10 inserts cost about 100.00. Anyone got any pics or plans for a homemade borin bar? I would hate to not be able to use these inserts .thethe boring bars are  30.00 through grizzly but the inserts r a killer !!

Not all inserts are equal.  Are the inserts for inside cut or external?  The geometry is different due to the curvature of the inside surface, it takes a different clearance calculation.  Assuming they are for boring and not turning, then the question is are for a negative rake, if so how much?  If you can get any part numbers off the insert box or packaging the thing to do is a online search for technical data from the manufacturer.  With this information you can easily design a holder for the insert.  Another source of inserts is eBay, but you have to do your homework and make sure you know that what your buying intended for your particular task.

Look around the the web and read a couple of tutorials on inserts to get you started.  Here is a link I ran across the other day, it will get you started.

Those inserts will not work well for boring, they are designed for turning.  Most of the boring inserts have a negative rake to allow them to match the interior curve of the  bore.  These appear to be of the TCMT family.  You can do a look up at most of the tool houses to get the breakdown of the letters used to designate different types of inserts.  The inserts you have are not expensive, a couple of dollars.  In general the price of inserts continues to drop as they become the favorite tool type to use for metal removal.
