This isn't my auction, but I thought it looked like a great deal. (Thanks Ironman for pointing this out on the Forum!).

It's for 44 taps in various sizes … for $26 bucks! For comparison purposes, I'll include a box below showing other taps and their prices on Ebay (typically a quality 3 piece set is about $15+).

And according to the seller, these are New USA Made quality taps. From the picture it looks like they are Besly taps. Here's the link:

Anyway, I thought I'd share. If  anyone decides to buy a set be sure to report back! Thanks again Ironman for pointing this deal out!

Tyler, I got mine. Shipped in 2 flat rate boxes, and all taps are US and appear unused.

But, he said 44 and there were 34.

In each set! He sent two short sets to me, and I know of a guy who got 81 taps in his.

So the guy can't count. It's ok.

All taps are National Fine thread. 70% of them are gun taps, good stuff for machine tapping.

Interesting. Thanks for the feedback. I'm a little worried with the inconsistant count. I think you should send him a message. After this post I contacted him to see how many sets he sold. He seems like a good guy that would do right by you if he made a mistake on the count.

He also explained that the taps are reconditioned, not "NEW". I think the ebay auction had "Like New" in the title and I mistook it for "New".

I'm not familiar enough with the process of sharpening taps to know if the tolerances change and if so, by how much. I've asked him for clarification on this so I can follow up with another post. A mea culpa of sorts since I said in my post that the sale was for new taps, not reconditioned. I feel bad that I didn't read the auction more carefully. But it's good to hear that they look good/new to you, despite the incorrect count.

Did anyone else get a set that can report on the quality and quantity of the taps received?

Tyler, no need to feel bad, anyone who never read the ebay blurb before ordering deserves what they get.

My only warning is…these are all NF taps, and when is the last time you threaded a 15/16" NF hole? Some of these taps are useless, but for the money a great many are very useful and the price is right.

Got mine a while back and my count was correct.  I ordered like right after I saw Tyler's post but couldn't find the post again for feedback.   They are used but if they were, they saw very little use.   Many will probably never be used but for $26 it a steal!

Alright Ironman, I spoke with the seller today and got a few answers concerning the odd counts you received. It turns out the guy can count … he sent you extras intentionally. Just to be nice!

The seller (Mark) was offering free shipping in the USA, but you were in Canada. And Canada has a 4lb limit per box (for the size he was using) so he had to split your order into two boxes. And since each box cost a fair amount to ship (I can't remember how much he said it cost per box, but it was a lot more than free) the seller felt bad – so he threw in extra taps intentionally. So it's not that he can't count, he was just trying to make the shipping cost on your purchase sting a little less. Which I think was mighty nice of him! I encouraged him to sign up for the forum and reply to this post, but he seemed reluctant, so I'm doing it for him.

I talked with Mark for quite a while today and he seems like a really good guy. He explained that all of the taps are used, but some have been used very little. He works at a shop where they replace taps before they get dull. He purchases the used taps, inspects, and resells them. Some CNC machines have a load indicator that will tell you when you need to replace your tooling. If you're running a manual machine or a machine that doesn't have a load indicator the other option is to use a tap for a certain number of holes, and then replace. It sounds like this is one of those shops that would rather replace their taps before they get dull than risk a burr or a broken tap. So most of the taps seem to have a lot of life left in them. The ones I received seemed brand new to me. Plenty sharp enough for manual tapping.

Mark also explained that he can put together a custom set for people if they need sizes that differ from what he was selling on his ebay site. So you could customize your set and avoid some of the NF sizes that are uncommon and usually not needed by the home enthusiast. However, he also mentioned that he doesn't have every size known to man. But he does have most of the common sizes, including a few metric sizes as well. And if you need a bunch of taps of all the same size, like 1/4-20, he can put a bundle of same-size taps together as well. He's willing to mix and match – which is really cool considering the price point.

I hope that clears things up. I think he will be advertising on the site starting next month. So if anyone needs a an inexpensive supply of taps, keep an eye out for his ad starting in September!
