Hi Jim, excellent modifications. And you live nearby! Perhaps I could come and do a shop tour sometime? I live in the Seattle area. For one thing, I'd love to make a video of your reverse setup so that people can more easily visualize how it works. And as a fellow G0602 owner I'd love to get a closer look at the other modifications you've done as well.

Thanks for sharing your mods, and welcome to the site!

Hi Tyler, sorry for posting in the wrong section.  I was going through the FAQ's and then started writing.  A visit would be nice, we are easy to find and are about an hour and one half from the either ferry.  Send me an email when you are ready or you can call we are in the book.

Was there ever a shop tour of his place and pics or videos of the lathe and mods?

No, as a matter of fact, I never saw the reply from Jim! Wow, that's embarrassing!

Embarassed

I was going through a stressful time back in May-June of last year. Actually, I was a stress-case for most of last year and a lot of things slipped by me, but that's no excuse. Thanks for bringing this post to my attention ALW!

Jim, are you still willing to have me over? I'd still like to visit!

Hmm, I just noticed you posted this to the FAQ. I'm going to move it to the General Discussion section and if I can I'll also edit the title (so it says G0602, not G602).

Hi Tyler, your always welcome to stop by see what takes places in far off Port Angeles.  Being from Seattle you know the distance and time involved.  Send me a private email and I will provide directions, it is easy to find and about one and one half hours from the Bainbridge Ferry.

Sounds good! You're 130 miles away – so a little over 2 hours by car. What are you doing next weekend? Feb 4 or 5?

Hi Tyler, either day works for me although Saturday would be the best.  Let me know and I will provide directions and a phone contact number.

Jim,

I was looking at all of your lathe improvements and must say I think it is quite impressive.  I am interested in your reverse gear with the tommy bar.   Could you show me more clearly how that works.

Hi Kasey, I will post some more information either this weekend or early next week.  In brief the method is to add an idler gear into the gear train thus reversing the output.  I used the 104 tooth since it is large enough in diameter to reach both the input driving gear and the output driven gear no matter the size.

Thanks Jim,  I look forward to seeing more about it.

Here is the VFD I installed on my lathe.  It is a Fuji af 300

I put it in a box, installed an auxillary fan and a Main power switch, a 20 amp double pole 240 volt.

I also installed a remote potentiometer to adjust the speed.  It is a 5k linear pot

I chose a 240 volt VFD so I decorated the outside of the box with some stickers

Hi Kasey, that is a nice looking installation.  I have used the same Fuji/GE controller on my mill.  I have a DC motor on the lathe but after my experience with VFD's I have concluded they are superior for the type of use that we have.  When the brushes give out in my current set up I will probably switch to a VFD.
