If you're anything like me you probably hate change. Most people hate change. I get it. But sometimes change is necessary.

I started ProjectsInMetal.com over the 2008 Christmas holiday, and went live in January of 2009. My goal was to create an online repository of free metalworking plans – something the web desperately needed. The site was successful and grew rapidly, thanks to you the viewers.

Over the past 5 years the web has come a long way and there have been a lot of improvements. But I drug my feet implementing many of these improvements. Partly because of a lack of time, but mostly because I hate change. So while other websites were implementing fancy things like image sliders and responsive designs ProjectsInMetal.com lagged behind and languished a bit.

For that I am sorry.

Over the last several months I have been tweaking and customizing the new look and feel of ProjectsInMetal.com and the new theme is now live!

It isn't perfect. I still need to fix a handful of things that weren't an issue on my dev server, but are mysteriously an issue on my live server. But they are minor issues (mostly layout related) and should be resolved shorty. Once I get all the kinks worked out for this recent theme change I plan to start fixing some of the issues with the forum. Forum activity has dropped a bit, in part due to the forum software being cumbersome. I hope to fix that over the next few months.

I created a video that walks you through the site changes. If you have trouble finding your way around the video will definitely help. Please feel free to give me your feedback (good or bad) via the forum.

Thank you all for your patience over the last 5 years, and for your continued support. You, the readers, are what make this site a success. I couldn't do it without you!

Barry, thanks for the kind words … but they've disappeared. I had to reset the link between the blog post and the forum. But I did see them! Thanks Laugh

Just a word on the new theme, I've noticed that when I mouse over a topic it looks as though the text disappears, it changes color  to white which makes it difficult to view the text due to the contrasting background.

Might what to look into that area, other than that, looks good.

Yea, I noticed the disappearing links when I recorded the video. I haven't had a chance to fix it yet, but it's on the list. Thanks!

I have, however, fixed a few of the nagging layout issues. And now the dropdown boxes don't show up randomly in the navigation area. So I've made some progress!

Thanks for continually upgrading the Projects In Metal site.  16,289 members can't be wrong.  I have a few projects I would like to share which I will when the current consulting job ends.  My projects have mostly been centered around making the 'extra' required tooling our hobbies require – like knurling tools, face plates, back plates, steady's, tool holders, jigs, and tapping accessories.  But, thanks for constantly striving to improve the site.

Regards, Al

Thanks Al! To be fair though, a decent number of the members aren't active on the forum. I'm hoping to resolve that shortly. But in the meantime I'm happy with the upgrades and busy fixing minor issues as they get reported. If you notice anything out of whack let me know!

The new format will take some time to get familiar, but I can see how it would be easier to navigate for someone new.

One thing I wish was kept was the column on the front page with the twenty most recent discussions.

I am new to the site, but I was wondering why I get thumbnails over the text of the artcles I am trying to read.  Maybe it's my version of Windows.  It is usually just  the beginning of the article.

The recent forum posts is still around, but I moved it to the lower right hand corner of the website (bottom of each page in the footer area).

Boy, I'm not sure what you mean. I'd be really grateful if you had a chance to make a video screenshot of what you're seeing. There's a browser based program called screenr.com that lets you record your screen. If you have a built in mic I'll even be able to hear you.

Screenr.com is free and easy to use. If you have a chance and wouldn't mind I'd be grateful if you took the time to show me. A screenshot would also work.

It would also be helpful to know what browser and version you're using. If you're using IE, what version? IE8? IE9? If you are using IE try using Chrome or Firefox. Both are better browsers and less buggy. If you're using IE7 or older that's probably the issue and it might not be fixable. But I'm happy to give it a try.
