My friend has a 500D, but the sound quality is blemished by the autofocus.

We have gone off on a tangent slightly. http://www.flickr.com/photos/gazawesome  Do you have a site?

The 500d is not quite there for video, but the 550d is being used by professionals.  It has an external mic input for starters.
Nice pics.  I did have a flickr page, but I can't seem to access my account.

Ah I see. I don't think that at this moment I can justify a new camera, if push comes to shove I can shoot film on my Fujifilm finepix s5800, which is what I used to do those threading videos.

Did you forget your password?

Gareth, Jerry,

Many thanks for the invaluable input, it is much appreciated.

I got in touch with an old friend works with metal and it turns out he has a decent drill press.  So I am most definitely going to continue the adventure myself.

I will update the thread with progress and pictures as things develop.

Cheers,

James

Yeah, it would be much better for you to make it yourself. You know. Learning new skills etc. Plus when you use the item its like "Yeah I made this baby". I still fancy having a go at one. I'll have to wait till I have a drill bit that is 15 mm though. I've just splashed out on a bit of photography equipment (not a rails mount). Plus I ordered some stuff for the mill the other day and it arrived today. Wrong shank size. Gah.

I look forward to seeing your progress.

Friend materialising with pillar drill: serendipity :)

I have ordered this 15mm bit (plus my center bit and a 4mm & 10mm):

13mm shank. My chuck only goes to 12. Nothing ever seems to fit, I'm sure there is a conspiracy.

12mm is an unusual size chuck Gareth, but they do exist. They are more usually 13mm or 1/2" (12.7mm). Do you have a lathe? Turn the shank down, so  long as your spindle can take the 15mm up the bore, it's easy enough to mount, turn down the OD of the shank, then still in the lathe you could cut some flats for the chuck jaws to engage with, gives excellent grip.

I'm sure its only 12 mm. That said I could be wrong. I might do just that. Thanks for the advice Jerry.

I used a CNC router table to fab this 15mm rail cage for my HF S100. I'd be happy to share .dxf or eps. files if anyone is interested. This one was a prototype. I am currently designing another to work out some errors with this rig. It is, despite its shortcomings, a useable piece of equipment.

My DIY rig.
