My friend has a 500D, but the sound quality is blemished by the autofocus.
We have gone off on a tangent slightly. http://www.flickr.com/photos/gazawesome Do you have a site?

OfflineGareth, Jerry,
Many thanks for the invaluable input, it is much appreciated.
I got in touch with an old friend works with metal and it turns out he has a decent drill press. So I am most definitely going to continue the adventure myself.
I will update the thread with progress and pictures as things develop.
Cheers,
James

OfflineYeah, it would be much better for you to make it yourself. You know. Learning new skills etc. Plus when you use the item its like "Yeah I made this baby". I still fancy having a go at one. I'll have to wait till I have a drill bit that is 15 mm though. I've just splashed out on a bit of photography equipment (not a rails mount). Plus I ordered some stuff for the mill the other day and it arrived today. Wrong shank size. Gah.
I look forward to seeing your progress.

Friend materialising with pillar drill: serendipity :)
I have ordered this 15mm bit (plus my center bit and a 4mm & 10mm):

Offline12mm is an unusual size chuck Gareth, but they do exist. They are more usually 13mm or 1/2" (12.7mm). Do you have a lathe? Turn the shank down, so long as your spindle can take the 15mm up the bore, it's easy enough to mount, turn down the OD of the shank, then still in the lathe you could cut some flats for the chuck jaws to engage with, gives excellent grip.
