This is a project that I had on the machines this week. thought it might intrest some of you guys. The parts are split, milled, doweled and put back together to do the lathe work. threads are 1.25-28 all tolarences are .001 this part holds a crystal for an electronics package. the threaded rings are berilium copper and have a .030 wall. the other parts are 303SS

Indeed this is excellent work, but I ask what is the application for these parts you say it has something to do with a crystal, could you elaborate.

I can't say what they do as of now because they are still in the R&D stage and my customer might slap my hand, but I don't mind sharing any of the machining process details.

beryllium copper is really nasty stuff to work with, right? does it machine poorly as well as being a health hazard or is it just poisonous Surprised?

Beryllium Copper does have its risk, you must machine it under coolant and never grind or sand it unless it is in a controled inviroment. It actually machines well in its hardened condition HT or AT. The only trouble is drilling, it will squeeze down on your drill. I grind one flute longer on my drill to prevent this. I work with this stuff alot along with Cadmium which is also nasty for your health. I take all safety precautions and have learned a lot of tricks over the years with this type of material.

we have used similar tools as these to build hydraulic cylinders, the clamshell part normally slides into the barrel of the cylinder and allows you to install the piston with packing without damaging the packing.
