OfflineI posted a little before Christmas about getting the Harbor Freight toolcutter/grinder on sale for $100, but that it would need a bit of a tune up. Well, I started that work this weekend. The first problem is that the trunnion brackets for the two side tables are "as cast", which means that they are not at nice right angles like you would hope. Here's how I trued them up.
There are four trunnion brackets in total, two for each table. Here I am machining a datum edge on two of them. Before clamping them to my mill's table, I used a file to remove any burrs from the undersides of the clamping faces. Then, I just ran the mill over both of them like you see here.
Next, I clamped the shorter faces (those at right angle to the table in the above photo) with the machined edges pointing down to my angle block. A couple of stacked parallels were used to set the datum edges parallel to the mill's table. Then, I fly cut the surfaces of the larger faces.

Finally, I flipped the bracket around and fly cut the shorter face. I didn't need to get the face precisely parallel with the table before milling, since all that really mattered was to have it perpendicular to the clamping (larger) face. So, I eyeballed it with a steel rule.
Now I have four brackets that have nice smooth clamping surfaces, and the important faces are at right angles to each other. I also cleaned up the sharp edges that resulted from this machining with a file, so I won't slice myself up while using them!
Next step is to clean up the faces of the wheel mounting plates and the undersides of the support tables, and then it will all go back together with a set of new wheels.

OfflineChris, this is excellent. I've seen youtube documentation of this process, but it's nice to have it in writing as well.
Would you be interested in writing this as a multi-part home page article instead? I'd pay you for it.
