I've made a start on making a new engine… The plans I've made up call for something that looks like this:

This is the cylinder as is.. I've not really done much with the project at the moment, it is far too cold in the shed to do anything really.

The block is made from aluminium, with a bronze insert bored out to 28mm. The Gerber is for scale.

It is good to see a new project.  I like the way your photos enlarge.  I take it this is not a 'wobbler'?

Regards, Al

Thanks. At the moment my camera takes pics that are 4272x2848 then I resize them to 1000x667 ish.

The engine, hopefully will run like the animation here http://www.animatedengines.com…..tive.shtml

I just need to figure out the timing and construction of the valves

I used a bit of cast iron from a sash window weight, cut it on the angle grinder, and chucked it in the lathe, I started to machine half of it so that I could chuck it up better.

After I'd done that I flipped it in the chuck and began to smooth out the other side.

I then machined the other side down.

This is going to be the piston, it will end up being 27.75mm in dia by 10mm.

I might scrap this piece as it seems to have quite a few casting pits in it. I guess I will have to wait and see how it will turn out.

Gareth, Do you have another piece of Iron for the piston?

If not, I've probably got a piece the right size for you to use, and it will be of reasonable quality.

I still have the rest of the window weight to use, l think it'll be ok.

Thank you very much for your offer, I shall keep it in mind if it does go sour.

No probs.

It'll sit in the bucket until it's needed.

Well at the moment it looks quite promising, I'm about a mill from final diameter and all is well so far… fingers crossed.

I've managed to make the piston, then I used a stainless steel rod for the connecting rod.

The piston was drilled through 4mm wide, then the 6mm rod, was turned to 4mm, with a little bit sticking out the end, I then used a hammer to rivet the rod in place.

There we are in place. It is quite a good fit.
