OnlineI really like your idea of making a stubby box wrench. I've been looking for a stubby 17mm wrench for my tailstock and I haven't been able to find one without buying a metric set. But with your idea I can just buy a single 17mm wrench at the hardware store and cut it to length. I already have the PlastiDip!

OfflineHmmm… That is interesting. I guess the angles of the handles are different on your lathe compared to mine. I don't believe my little stubby levers ever stick up above the top of the headstock. If they did, I'm sure I would be busting knuckles every time I reached for something on top of the lathe. 
I'll bet the advantage in leverage when changing gears is a plus though!
