Greetings folks. I've been lurking about for a while. You folks a a wealth of information and I thank you for it. I'm from Clarksville, TN.

I've always been interested in anything mechanical, ever since I was a kid. I use to take my toys apart just to see how they worked. I bet I'm not the only one. Smile Once upon a time I worked as a Jig maker for a display company. I never used a lathe but I became very familiar with a Bridgeport mill. Not an Expert by any means, but I know my way around a one.

At the moment I own neither a lathe nor a mill but I intend to rectify this just after Xmas. My plan is to purchase a cheap lathe and a fairly good Mill/Drill. I have more use for a Mill than a lathe at the moment. But since the Lathe, is the Prince of Tools, I might have to change my mind once I get into it.

Here's what I own at the moment,

Harbor Freight has the mini lathe on sale.  $399, which isn't a bad price.

ChuckB,

Welcome to Projects in Metal.  Nice pictures of some of your toys.  More pictures always welcomed.

What size of mill are you thinking of?  I'm assuming something smaller than a Bridgeport knee mill, right?  I and several other members on the board have a Grizzly G0704, which weighs in at around 260 pounds, but has a fairly large table for its size.  Its supposedly somewhere between a X2 and X3 in size, although some people are claiming that it does as good (or better) than an X3 despite weighing some 60-80 pounds less.  You should see what this crazy dude named Hoss has done with this mill over at http://www.g0704.com.  He also has tons of videos over on YouTube.  He has done a CNC conversion on this mill, along with making a power drawbar and a automatic tool changer.

Or are you thinking of something like an RF-45 clone?  It is a bench top mill weighing in at some 700 pounds.

Are you thinking of keeping whichever mill you get manual or eventually doing a CNC conversion?

Hi Titaniumboy. The g0704 looks like what I have in mind. An RF-45 clone would be nice but the price would overheat my wallet. I would probably just leave it manual. Hoss has done some amazing things with his. Thanks for the link, the motor controller and motor upgrades are interesting.
