H5868 Lathe Tool Kit problem...

So, when I bought my G0602, I also bought a H5868 (http://www.grizzly.com/product…..-pc-/H5868) 20 piece lathe tool kit.

Ran into some problems when I went to mount the tool holder on my tool post… The mounting gap in the standard G0602 tool post measures at 0.700", the tool holder itself measures 0.870".

My thought is, that if I take the tool holder, mount it on an angle plate and mount an endmill in the spindle (I have an MT3 endmill holder and MT4-MT3 adapter) then I'll be able to mill a little over .170" off the top surface of the holder.

Anyone have any input on this at all? I know most people have switched to a QCTP but that's not in my budget at the moment.

Those tool holders are intended to be held in a rocker style tool holder, not the four way tool holder. What is intended for your tool holder is to simply put shims under the tool blank.

Well that makes perfect sense!

I'm still thinking I may pursue the milling of my holder… Seems like it might make things a bit easier in the long run… Hopefully!

Building a rocker tool post is pretty easy. I built one for my G0602 lathe. I don't use it very often but I do have it if needed.

Are you sure? CDCO Tools is selling an AXA size QCTP for only $78.

Getting this for under a hundred dollars is hard to beat. I only question the quality of CDCO, because their product is much cheaper then the equivalent from grizzly or HF.

If I return the tool kit to Grizz then I'll have to take a 10% restocking fee hit… I'll invest in a QCTP in the future

You will not regret going to a QCTP.  I wished I did it sooner myself!!

I know that the qctp is worth it. I got one for my g0602 and I'm spoiled. All the tool shops carry the china knock off qctp they work fine. They seem to be very well made. mine does have a slight problem when I use one side of it. It's hard to get the tool holder on the post, I was even informed buy the store about this problem and they were going to want to replace it if I returned it, no cost to me either for that. Heck they contacted me about it I hadn't had it very long and hadn't even noticed that problem but I decided it wasn't that big of a deal so I just kept it. So don't worry about them not being good.

I have had to mill the bottom on some of the holders so I can get the cutting bit on center when using the larger size cutting bits. Still that doesn't bother me either.

All I can say is the qctp is worth the expense, when you can afford one.

I'll second that.  I had the lathe (Homier 7x12) for almost 5 years before i broke down and got one.  Man, what a difference.  A lot less hassle changing out tools.  I only wish they sold a set with a couple of more holders; I never seem to have enough.
