Hi Luke,
Welcome to the forum! The hammer is a great first project. If you can, I'd recommend that you order your faces first so that you can measure them and adjust the shape of the hammer head to fit them perfectly.
Jime Rose just finished his hammer and wrote about it here. A few questions came up while Jim was making his hammer, so be sure to check out his thread. If you have any questions while you work through the project feel free to let us know. Also, post pictures of the process if you have a chance. Pictures are not only fun to see, they are helpful (from a setup standpoint) for others who might want to make the same project.
Anyway, thanks for introducing yourself and welcome to the site!

Hey Luke,
Welcome to the site! Like Tyler said I just finished the hammer, it was my first project on the lathe. I ordered my hammer faces from McMaster Carr. I think ENCO has them too. They did measure just a little shy of 1.50, but they are a little inconsistent. I had a little trouble with the threading. I didn't have a thread gauge(then), so I just used a nut the determine when I was done threading. After I used a tap to thread the hammer head it was a supper tight fit. I made 2 and one of them I had to take a die and run back over the handle threads. That being said cutting the threads with a single point cutter was the funnest part, that and knurling the handle.
If I can help let me know.
Jim

Hi Luke
Great to see another guy from Bendigo. I was a fitting & turning teacher at BRIT for 23 years.
I'm also a member of the Bendigo Model Engineers we run the exhibition at Kangaroo Flat.
If you get a chance drop into the Men's shed in Cunneen St Long Gully and have a look at our workshop
