I found the site and joined up. I'm a retired and disabled machinist. 40 yrs exp. I have had 2 open heart surgeries the last being Dec 16th a couple of months ago. This time just a single bypass, but the biggie was the A-valve replacement. I'm slowing down so this might be a fun place to visit. I do have a shop out back and I've been playing out there just to make me feel better. A lathe, couple of milling machines. I think I was able to get a picture posted in the signature thing. if not I'll have my son do it.

I'll look around and join in when I can. Have  good day. RickCool

Welcome Rick, glad to have you (and your expertise) here. Let me know if you have any issues figuring out the site. I'm thinking about starting a section for members to share pictures of their shop … so if yours is fit to photograph I'd like to see what you're working with.

I don't see a pic in your signature, let me know if you need help with that.

Once again, welcome!

NOTE: I work full time and I'm attending college full time as well. So if it takes me a few days to respond, please don't take it personally. If it's urgent please send me a Private Message.

Rick, I just noticed your signature (is it new or did I miss it when I replied before?) and I couldn't agree more with your statement. That's the entire reason I started this site, to help open the metalworking to a larger (and hopefully younger) audience.

As you can probably tell by my profile picture, I'm in the younger category. I got started in machining a few years ago by chance and because of the frustration I felt whenever something metal broke around the house (normally I fix everything broken, but metal manipulation used to be beyond my reach).

The first thing I did was start googling metalworking. So while all my friends were browsing forums and sites about X-Box or PS3 Games, I was searching for sites and forums about machining. I was surprised at how limited the selection was. Sure there are a dozen or so amazing metalworking sites with lots of information. But there are thousands of similar woodworking sites, and tens of thousands of good gaming sites. So why such a shortage in machining sites? I don't know. Perhaps because some of the old-timers that have all the knowlegde would rather run a lathe than code HTML.

Anyway, that's why I started ProjectsInMetal – to serve as a repository of information for people who are new to metalworking. It's been a little slow-going lately because I've been pretty busy with work but my vision for this site is twofold. (1) A site with lots of fun and exciting projects updated weekly, and (2) a lively forum with daily chatter about metalworking.

And all of it for free.

Anyway, it sounds like you share my vision to some degree, so thank you. The next time you're talking to a young person about metalworking, refer them to the site. Maybe … just maybe … I can help them catch the machining bug. That's my goal!

Ok I'm doing something wrong, but I figure it's easy to fix once you splain it to me. I've tried replying to the email notices

to "projectsinmetal.com" <tyleryoungblood@projectsinmetal.com>

but I'm getting that email daemon thing when returned. Do I just repond here in a post. I was trying to send a couple of pictures of my shop in the first one.

I'll go over to my yahoo sent mail and cut and paste what I wrote in each letter. If I reply here only, that's cool.

In the first cut and paste it askes about putting a picture in the signature place. I need help with that. I'll be right back with the cut and paste stuff.

1st email from 3/6

Thanks for the welcome. I think I added the photo but not sure. I'll have my son check things out for me Sunday. I write through this yahoo mail because I use  A.T.&T. wifi modem thing and it doesn't use outlook to send mail. So I have to copy email addresses and then paste them into the to place. I'm a pretty decent machinist, and love working with Autocad, Turbocad and Inventor but basic computer stuff like forums confuse me. I'll do what I can to help other folks on the forum. As you can see from my other forum thing that is just below what I'm typing I'm in an open heart surgery survivors form to.
If I have any problems I'll be sure to ask. I've seen some neat stuff on your site. I have a lot of jigs and fixtures for smaller lathes and milling machines. All in dxf. so I'll have Matt take a look at the posting plans part of the forum to see if thats what I need to post them. He's also going to get me a 50pix avatar. I'll attach a couple of my shop pixs to this. It started out as just a thanks and turned into a book. But that's the way old geezers roll  ( son says for me to never say that.)
Have a great Saturday. Rick

2nd email from today

Hi Tyler
It's great you have started your site, more power to ya. I'll do what I can to help out. I tried responding to your first email but was returned. I may have done it wrong, so I'll send this. I sent it to
tyleryoungblood@projectsinmetal.com but didn't have projectsinmetal.com. So you should get this one this time. if you don't get this email let me know and I'll try something different.  About the pictures I have shrunk several pix at tinypic.com. I see several urls they put there to copy for posting into forums and such. Is this what I should be posting into the picture box? Thanks for any help. I'll print out your website address and give copies to my son to pass out at the college to the young guys in his class.
Oh, I was trying to give you a chuckle when I said if you don't get this email, let me know and I'll try something different. As my son says, "You ain't right, Dad!"
Rick

Ok I just played with tinypic and figured out how to do it, so now I have a picture of one side of the shop with my mini mill, micro mill and lathe. at least you can see part of the shop now. Rick

Hi Rick, I had to laugh a little when I read that you like to play with Autocad, Turbocad, and Inventor, but struggle with forums. I'm precisely the other way around. It took me days to learn enough autocad to draw up the plans for the MT3 Die holder found here. Next time I'll be calling you for help! :D

Ok, a few things. There's a much easier way to upload pictures to the forum. Instead of putting them in your signature you can use the Insert/Edit image link. I put together a short tutorial here.

If you want to use an image in your signature (which is totally fine) you might want to use a smaller one. You've got the right idea by using a link to an image, but your image is just a bit oversized.

Also, unlike many forums where you can reply to the e-mail notifications that you recieve, this forum isn't set up that way. In fact, tyleryoungblood@projectsinmetal.com isn't even a working e-mail (I've never set it up). The forum management software I use (SimplePress) doesn't have this reply-to-email capability, but it would be nice if it did. Maybe in a future release. So for now you'll have to log back into the forum to leave a reply.

And finally, I'd suggest turning on auto-subscribe (if you haven't done so already). Directions on how to do that can be found in my signature.

And lastly, if you need someone to shrink a picture to 50x50 for your profile I can send you a PM with my e-mail address. I'd be happy to shrink a pic for you.

Anyway, I'm glad to have you on board, especially with your Autodesk experience!
