(Note: To listen to the actual podcast you need to Read the original blog post)

In this podcast we finally get to a few listener questions, including two from Sammy in Seattle, as well as several questions from Simon all the way from Brisbane Australia!

Show Notes:

  • Sammy from Seattle asks about lathe tooling nomenclature. For example, AL = a No lead angle Left Hand tool.
  • Sammy also asks about the term "Included Angle".
  • Simon from Brisbane Australia asks about the benefits and drawbacks of CNC conversions in the hobby arena.
    • Barry mentions a conversion kit for the Sieg X2 from Xylotex that he used on his "FrankenMiniMill" that has 6' of X travel."
    • Barry also mentions Gecko and Mach-3.
  • Simon also asks if he should try and maintain manual control for his CNC conversion.
  • Simon also inquires about follow rests. Specifically, he wants to know if follow rests need to be re-adjusted after every cut.
    • Barry also gives a nifty tip about an alternative to a follow rest (photograph coming soon!).
  • Next Simon asks about the dangers of inhaling metal dust.
  • Barry talks about dangerous metals including beryllium copper and how hazardous it can be in dust-form.
  • Simon next asks about tips for turning and drilling solid copper. Barry talks about using a neutral or negative rake when cutting copper.
  • Tyler talks about how to buy metal from a metal supplier without looking like an idiot.
  • Tyler also gives a tip about organizing your scrap bin.
  • Barry talks about how to determine the composition of an unknown metal using the "spark test".
  • Then Barry talks about seasoning cast iron before you machine it.

This was a terrific podcast because we actually got to respond to questions from members. This is probably helpful to new amateur Machinists since there is a huge mound of material available but finding the answer to a question specific to new folk might require sifting through the entire mound which could take years. I was particularly taken with the discussion of machining hazardous materials. That was a great question Simon.

Please members, give us more questions. I have been at this so long that I cannot remember all of the things that stumped me when I first started. Either that or I am too focused on the things that are stumping me today. Anyhoo, send in, call in, or walk in your questions, they will help the whole community.

Thanks so much to those who participate by questioning, listening or contributing answers.

I see there is a two digit number in the required math at the bottom of the screen, when did we move to higher math Tyler?

Well Chris, you're right. I'm not sure why the podcast isn't playing in the link at the very top. I'll try to track it down. It does play correctly in the original blog post, and you can also listen to it by clicking on the podcast button on the menu bar, but not on this forum post. I'll figure it out. In the meantime, try one of the other locations. And like Jr. said, you can also find it on itunes.

In the meantime I've changed the post to read Note: to listen to the actual podcast you need to Read original Blog Post. The podcasts work from within the blog posts, but not from within the forum for some reason … thanks for the heads up!
