This accessory is so simple,I'm allmost embarrassed to mention it,but,if there's anyone out there like me,I'm sure they'll hit their heads with the heel of their hand, and say "damn!,why did'nt I think of that"?When working as a machinist, every lathe had a 'Chuck board'.This was a piece of board,or plywood that was placed over the bed underneath the chuck,it had a piece of wood attached to each side of the board,It's purpose was to protect the bed(and to an extent the fingers) when chucks were being changed.I realise that most of the lathes us amateurs own are small, and the chucks not that heavy, but for larger lathes,it is most definately very usefull,or even where someone has a condition that weakens hands,or wrists, such as arthritis.

Yep, good tip. I don't have a wooden board, but I have an old UHMW plastic cutting board that serves the purpose well. But like you said, for my lathe the chucks are light so it's mostly a precaution. But I have had the chuck slip once and I was glad the cutting board was there.

The college I attended had wooden platforms with a trough cut in them at a height so that the chuck lined up closely to the threads when resting on the wooden platform. And since they had a trough there was no worry of the chuck rolling off the platform. It made chuck changes much easier!

NOTE: I work full time and I'm attending college full time as well. So if it takes me a few days to respond, please don't take it personally. If it's urgent please send me a Private Message.
