Having scribed a line dot mark it with a punch, you can then split the dots to get to size.

I have both a machinist's type (flat legs) and a toolmaker's type (round legs.) Actually, I find it very easy to use and very accurate. It all depends upon your skill level. Once you use one, you would never be without one, since it saves a lot of tedious measuring and laying out. Actually try one; you'll see what I mean.
