On the topic of tungsten vs tungsten carbide, the former is a metal, whereas the latter is a ceramic. Tungsten electrodes are metal alloys, with the alloying agents (e.g. thorium) being added to improve the base metal's performance. As hard as tungsten and it's alloys are, as metals, they still are malleable, whereas ceramics are not, and thus the ceramics tend to be harder.
