The Basics of Metalworking Taps, Tapping Fluids, & Tap Handles

The Basics of Metalworking Taps, Tapping Fluids, & Tap Handles

I had a chance to sit down with Barry Young a while back and I asked him to talk about taps, tapping fluids, and tap handles. I wanted his overview to be as basic as possible so it would be beneficial to beginners, but I ended up learning a few things myself - especially about novel cutting fluids (in part 2). I videotaped Barry's commentary and divided it into 3 parts: part 1 - various taps and their uses, part 2: tapping fluids and lubricants, and part 3 - tap handle designs and limitations. Read More »

Shop Tour: Jim Schroeder Shows Us Around His Metalworking Shop!

Last year Jim Schroeder agreed to let me visit his shop for a “tour”. Grinding HSS Lathe Tools By Hand: Part 1 – Grinding a RH Tool

Grinding HSS Lathe Tools By Hand: Part 1 – Grinding a RH Tool

This is part one of a 3-part video series in which Barry Young shows us how to grind high speed steel tool blanks by hand. In this video Barry shows us how to grind the most common tool form, a right hand lathe tool. In upcoming videos Barry will show us how to make a left hand tool and a threading tool. Barry also mentions using EZE-Lap hones during the final phase of grinding a HSS tool for burr removal and touch up. I provide a description, image, and a link to where to find them on Amazon. EZE-Lap hones are inexpensive and great for putting a fresh edge on a dull tool and are a highly recommended addition to your toolbox. There is also a complete transcript of the video for foreign viewers (so they can paste it into Google Translate) and for any viewer who might have trouble hearing Barry's wonderful commentary. Enjoy! Read More »
